On The Set With ABCFamily’s Mystery Girls
When I received an invite to L.A. for the Guardians Of The Galaxy/100 Foot Journey Press event, I was thrilled to find out we would also be covering some of my favorite ABCFamily TV shows.
First stop, the set of Mystery Girls, starring Jennie Garth and Tori Spelling. This was my very first time visiting a television set. The first thing I noticed upon my arrival, was the amount of people required to make a television show successful. I was well aware that I would see the cast, a cameraman, and a director or two. I was unaware of the dozens of others that I would see. We tend to forget about the makeup and hair artists, wardrobe, multiple directors, sound, the people moving props, those that run lines while the cast is getting dressed, the lighting experts, and so many others that I’m sure I am forgetting to mention. It takes a large team to run a television show. I was truly amazed at how well they all worked together.
How did you come up with the idea of Mystery Girls?
TORI: I had done a Christmas movie for ABC Family and I knew they were looking for comedies and I used to be a huge fan of mysteries in the eighties and my dad’s shows and I loved Remington Steele and I just wanted to pair that with comedy. And that’s where it came from.
Was it automatic for Jennie to play the other part?
TORI: I was hoping? I was praying that she would wanna do it. And when I thought of the idea, I was like no one else could do this. But, I didn’t know at the time what she (Jennie) was doing, what her plans were so I was just,
emailed her and…
JENNIE: You emailed me a very sweet letter. No pressure but, just read it. And I read it.
My thoughts: I don’t know about you, but I was a HUGE fan of 90210, so when I heard that these two ladies were coming back together, I was intrigued, and excited. I’m so glad Jennie said YES! I remember when I first heard of the show, I was secretly hoping they would invite even MORE old cast members to be on the show……
Do you plan on having any more cameos from 90210?
TORI: We would like that. We think so. I think the first season we mainly were establishing the show and the reunion of us from 90210 and, should we go a second season, which we hope we do, , I think we would want to have a cameo or two from our 90210 group stars.
It would be a good fit. Are you thinking about Shannon?
TORI: Shannon or Luke.
JENNIE: Yeah, Luke.
My thoughts: I’m secretly hoping for Luke too!! That’s my vote. I’m also VERY excited that Joe E. Tata, (“Nat of “Beverly Hills, 90210”) will be making a cameo on the 7/23 episode at 8:30pm ET/PT – be sure to tune in!!
How do you relate to your characters in real life?
TORI: Obviously we’re different than our characters. But I think there is a part of both of us in our characters. Like the relationship we have in real life? I feel like I’m in real life very trusting of everyone. And I go into everything kind of full force and I don’t really take into consideration, what’s going on, and our friendship. Jen always kinda steps in and protects me over the years. And I feel like that’s what Charlie and Holly are like too.
JENNIE: Yeah. I’m, I’ve always been more of a protector, a big sister to her? Since the very beginning. I’ve always been a little tougher you know? Physically? You know I can, I can take care of myself.
My thoughts: Both of the girls were very sweet! I could tell throughout the interview that they are very good friends in real life. Toward the end of the interview, we found out that both girls are moms now. They juggle work and family life. Jennie has 3 kids, and Tori has 4 kids. It was great to see the “mom” side of them come out during the interview.
We also had the honor of interviewing Miguel Pinzon and I have added a few of my favorite questions/answers below. Miguel is funny, sweet, and completely down to earth. He talked to each and every one of us and encouraged extra pictures with him.
How did you get involved in the show?
MIGUEL: I was in San Francisco doing a job, not an acting job. Those jobs you sort of take to make the acting jobs work and my agent sent me the info and I was like, I really can’t. I’m doing 10 million things at once. I think this is just one that I’m going to let go. And he said please, please, please just do it. And I said okay. I scrambled and put it on tape and let it go as one usually does. Two weeks later I got a call that the producers want to see you. Oh my God you’re kidding. And then I kept presuming it would sort of stop there. And then it just sort of happened, which was amazing!
So this is your first job?
MIGUEL: This is my first big rodeo. I came from New York and had been in LA for a period of time and did a little thing on Law and Order. And then did a little bit on 30 Rock. But this is my first series regular thing and my first time I get to do three camera comedy – just a dream. It’s so awesome.
My thoughts: While we were on set, Miguel found out he had been nominated for Teen Choice Awards! WOW – What an honor! Of course we congratulated him on earning an AWARD and he responded:
MIGUEL: Earned a nomination. Earned a nomination. Does anyone know 17-year-olds? Get them voting!
After the interviews, we headed onto the set. If you have had the chance to check out an episode of Mystery Girls, you have seen the bright colors, and the fun designs that decorate the office, and other scenes during the show. I can tell you that the set is even more vibrant in person. After visiting the set, I think I have a new decorating plan for my home office. Out with the browns and pale yellows, and in with the bright pink, zebra patterns, and bold prints. And, the props, they were real! Here I am “blogging” on set:
